Lusaka sits on a plateau at about 1,200 meters elevation, which actually keeps things more moderate than you might expect for a tropical African capital. The city experiences a distinct wet season from November through March, with January typically being the wettest month at around 211mm (8.3 inches) of rainfall. The dry season runs from May through September, and I mean properly dry—June through September see essentially zero rainfall. What's interesting is that despite being in the tropics, Lusaka's altitude means you'll get pleasantly cool nights during the dry season, with temperatures dropping to around 10°C (50°F) in June and July. The temperature pattern is worth noting: it's not blazingly hot year-round like you might assume. The hottest months are actually September and October, just before the rains arrive, when highs reach around 31°C (88°F). Once the wet season kicks in, temperatures moderate a bit, hovering around 27°C (80°F). The dry winter months (May through August) are genuinely comfortable, with daytime highs in the mid-20s to low-30s Celsius (mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit) and those surprisingly cool nights. Humidity tends to stay around 70% year-round, though it feels more oppressive during the wet season when combined with warmer temperatures.

Best Time to Visit

Beach & Relaxation
While Lusaka is landlocked, June through August offers the best weather for pool time and outdoor relaxation at lodges, with warm days, cool evenings, and zero chance of rain.
Cultural Exploration
May through September is ideal for exploring the city and markets, as you'll have comfortable temperatures, dry conditions, and clear skies without the oppressive heat of October or the afternoon downpours of the wet season.
Adventure & Hiking
April through August provides the best conditions for outdoor activities, with the landscape still green from recent rains in April-May, and the dry, cooler weather from June onwards making physical activities more comfortable.
Budget Travel
January through March tends to be low season due to heavy rains, so you'll likely find better deals on accommodation, though you'll need to plan around afternoon thunderstorms and muddy conditions.

What to Pack

Year-Round Essentials

High-SPF sunscreen
At 1,200m elevation, UV rays are stronger than you'd expect, even on cloudy days during the wet season.
Insect repellent with DEET
Mosquitoes are present year-round in Lusaka, and malaria is endemic in Zambia, so protection is essential.
Reusable water bottle
Staying hydrated is crucial in Lusaka's climate, and tap water isn't safe to drink, so you'll be refilling from filtered sources.
Wide-brimmed hat or cap
Sun protection is important throughout the year, especially during the hot, cloudless dry season months.
Power bank
Load shedding (power cuts) happens occasionally in Lusaka, so keeping devices charged is worth planning for.
Comfortable walking shoes
Sidewalks can be uneven and you'll likely do more walking than expected, regardless of the season.
Small umbrella or compact rain jacket
Even during the dry season, the odd shower can surprise you, and it's essential during the wet months.

Wet Season (November-March)

Clothing
Lightweight, quick-dry shirts and pants, Shorts and breathable dresses, Light rain jacket or waterproof layer
Footwear
Waterproof sandals or shoes that can handle mud and dry quickly
Accessories
Compact umbrella, Waterproof bag or cover for electronics, Sunglasses for bright mornings
Layering Tip
Single light layers work best since it's warm and humid; focus on fabrics that dry quickly after afternoon storms.

Early Dry Season (April-May)

Clothing
Light long-sleeve shirts for sun protection, Comfortable pants and shorts, Light sweater for cooler evenings
Footwear
Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers as conditions are dry
Accessories
Light scarf for dusty conditions, Sunglasses, Day pack for excursions
Layering Tip
You'll want a light layer for evenings as temperatures start dropping, but days are still warm enough for summer clothing.

Cool Dry Season (June-August)

Clothing
Long pants and jeans, Long-sleeve shirts, Warm fleece or jacket for evenings, T-shirts for midday
Footwear
Closed-toe shoes and socks for chilly mornings and evenings
Accessories
Warm scarf or neck warmer, Light gloves for early mornings if doing safari, Beanie or warm hat
Layering Tip
Think proper layering—mornings and evenings can be genuinely cold at 10°C (50°F), but you'll strip down to a t-shirt by midday.

Hot Dry Season (September-October)

Clothing
Lightweight, breathable fabrics, Loose-fitting clothes in light colors, Sun-protective long sleeves, Shorts and skirts
Footwear
Breathable sandals or lightweight shoes that won't overheat your feet
Accessories
Wide-brimmed sun hat, Cooling towel, Extra sunglasses
Layering Tip
Minimal layering needed—it's hot and dry, so focus on staying cool and protected from the intense sun.
Plug Type
Type C, D, and G (British-style three-pin is most common)
Voltage
230V, 50Hz
Adapter Note
Most travelers will need an adapter; UK visitors can use their plugs directly, but US/Canadian travelers need both an adapter and possibly a voltage converter for sensitive electronics.

Skip These Items

Heavy winter coat (even the 'cold' season doesn't require more than a light jacket) Excessive toiletries (basics are readily available in Lusaka's shops and supermarkets) Hair dryer (most hotels provide them, and it's extra weight you don't need) Too many shoes (one pair of walking shoes and sandals will cover most situations) Bulky beach towels (accommodations provide towels, and you're not near a beach anyway)

Month-by-Month Guide

January

Peak wet season in Lusaka, with heavy afternoon thunderstorms being the norm rather than the exception. You'll get around 211mm (8.3 inches) of rain, though mornings are often clear and sunny. The rain actually cools things down a bit, keeping temperatures around 27°C (80°F) during the day, but the humidity makes it feel quite muggy.

Temperatures stay around 27°C (80°F) during the day with cooler nights at 15°C (59°F), making it one of the more comfortable months to visit.

June

Peak dry season and the coolest month of the year. Zero rainfall and daytime temperatures around 23°C (74°F) make it comfortable for exploring, but nights can actually get quite chilly at 11°C (51°F). The sky is typically clear and blue, and the air is crisp—quite different from the tropical image many people have of Zambia.

July

Similar to June with zero rainfall and cool conditions. Daytime temperatures climb slightly to 26°C (78°F), but nights remain cold at 10°C (50°F)—genuinely cold by tropical standards. This is peak tourist season for good reason: the weather is about as perfect as it gets, with endless sunny days and comfortable conditions.

October

Continues hot at 31°C (88°F) with nights at 18°C (64°F), and still virtually no rain—just 10mm (0.4 inches) if you're lucky. This is often called 'suicide month' locally because of the oppressive heat and dryness. The humidity starts building even without rain, creating uncomfortable conditions, and everyone is waiting for the rains to break.
